What is bespoke?

March 21, 2013 @ 4:21 pm
posted David Law

You often hear me talk about “Bespoke” so I thought it was time to explain why I push so hard for you to look at my bespoke services, products and the benefits behind this, while we continue to see main stream retailer stagnated over the last few years.

Many high street and online retailers are starting to offer a bespoke service and with that comes confusion, in my mind bespoke means to offer, create and design something to a clients creative mind, or a mixture of theirs and mine which is totally unique. The retailers who now claim to offer a bespoke service will allow you to choose from an existing design and select your diamond, as you can see it’s not quite the same.

I am not saying that is wrong to call it bespoke, but to me and many in my industry see Bespoke as "designed for you”. For me the above does not fall into the spirit of bespoke and in my opinion should be called “custom made”.

Why the importance?, well seeing your design come to life is very different to simply changing a stone and if you have never experienced this bespoke service I would highly recommend you give it a try, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

You will not only be amazed at the final look but also how it fits neatly into your budget. So if you would to talk to me about creating a bespoke and unique piece for you I would love to hear from you

Platinum all the way..

December 11, 2012 @ 10:07 am
posted David Law

From Fabergé to Cartier, the world’s greatest jewellery designers have always preferred working with platinum, and the reason for this, well let’s see……

Platinum is a pure naturally white precious metal that will never fade or tarnish, and  it is hypoallergenic making it  ideal for those with sensitive skin. It’s eternal, with everlasting radiance, has unequalled durability, protective and resistance to wear making which makes you design last a lifetime no matter what you do for a living.

It has been known not to change shape so precious stones are held firmly and securely. The density of platinum makes it more durable than other jewellery metals. Considered rare for many reasons and a treasure coveted by influential individuals for centuries.

Platinum will add to the exclusivity of your bespoke jewellery, a statement of individuality, and desired by those in the know. Also only found in very few places around the world, making it 30 times more rare than gold.

With all the reasons above, maybe it’s worth a thought when designing your piece, as it’s not always “gold” that makes the heart flutter, image the possibilities you have with Platinum and the durability of the piece you design for your loved one

As a bespoke designer, I fully endorse using platinum in my designs unlike gold,  no longer comes at a price premium

The Perfect Gift

December 5, 2012 @ 3:30 pm
posted David Law

And we are off, Christmas is around the corner and the shops are piled high with merchandise, the only thing that appears to be missing is the foot fall.

Let’s see why….
We have just passed mega Monday the busiest day for buying gifts over the Internet (The equivalent to Cyber Monday in the USA) so that  could be part of the reason for the missing foot fall, taking a closer look at the data, internet sales even with the reported large increases only account for 10% of all retail sales, so what’s actually happening.

The high street stores holding mega sales all year round, reported weak sales and  consumers holding off until the last minute hoping that the stores will drop their prices even further may well have caused a spiral effect in the market place today.

but will you find the items discounted that you really want?  I am not so sure.

Spend might be up, but money is clearly tighter than it has been for many years, and the pressure mounts when you have to find the perfect gift, like so many Gift Vouchers have become ever popular easy to choose, budget set and everyone is happy, or are they?

The only trouble with this option is that for me is seems so impersonal and can be deemed as showing a lack of effort in seeking gift for your loved one.

For me, I would ask “Have you thought about creating your own bespoke piece of jewellery”. And I can image your first thought would be possibly yes but I can't afford it and secondly they might hate what I choose.

What if I said I had the perfect solution to getting that gift now, all wrapped up and ready for Christmas day.

The process is a simple one, together we can design the perfect jewellery gift, from diamond, gemstone or precious metal. Your choice of earrings, pendants, cufflinks, accessories and of course rings. But here is the clever part instead of being unsure we would have created a design together for you to give as a gift in a stunning wax form that is so realistic that they will be tempted to wear it and take the next step to creating it.

This way the risk is taken away, your intended will know that you truly love them and should they want to make any changes to the design it will not be an issue but a wonderful journey that will ultimately form the perfect gift that has come from you.

What can be innovative than that?
Don’t forget that your design will be made to your budget and any later changes to the design will be free

So what you waiting for get in touch today and give your loved one a truly personal gift that no one else will have because I never repeat a unique design that I have created

Can it be Christmas time, already ??

November 15, 2012 @ 2:56 pm

Well the Christmas lights in Oxford Street are live, and its official the countdown to Christmas is well and truly under way

The holiday season has always been the season of giving and receiving presents and also traditionally a very popular time to ask the big question.

I have spoken to many clients who have proposed with that every important ring under the tree, on top of a mountain with the winter sun beating down knee deep in snow, on a hot Caribbean beach or as Big Ben strikes 12 on New Year's Eve, the possibilities and ideas are endless at this time of year you can see why it is so popular.

So how do you choose the ideal ring for the holiday season

2012 has seen the biggest change in trends that I can ever remember, the solitaire ring is no longer “cool”, and coloured gemstones are being reintroduced into the design process, all in all this makes it a great time to be a designer.

There is also one final major change in the world of trends, This is “where”. where what?, I hear you say – well where will you buy the ring. The high street stores are failing fast and the sparkle is on a dimmer switch and the Online stores are just pages and pages of crammed images and slashed prices and hours are spent wasting time trying hard to find what your after.

Many of my clients come with their own ideas as a starting point, these tend to come from little hints that their partner has given them or from the partners best friend.

Either way we will chat it all through and come up with the perfect solution that works for you and a design that truly makes the idea come alive.

If your after something alternative to the solitaire and innovative then your options are endless, allow me to tell you about how I can take you through the bespoke journey from the idea to a concept that is so beautiful and exciting.

I will help you design the perfect ring and choose your ideal diamond,  we will follow the path of designing the ring first in 3D and then by producing a stunning 3D wax model for you to enjoy. But it doesn’t end here, this is where things get really exciting, instead of completing the ring from the wax as I would normally do I will set your chosen diamond into a temporary ring and you will present that and the wax ring you have taken the time to design with me to your fiancée in a beautiful silk box. That’s innovation in a box and a present your partner will never expect and so the journey begins again….

This way you will have the best of both worlds of designing a truly unique ring and without the need of picking a ring off the shelf and at the same time allowing your fiancée to become part of the design process whilst having a ring to wear.

So there you have it a “innovative bespoke” option, just another cool offering from David Law

25 years and going strong

I have made many bespoke eternity rings over the years adding blue stones for a boy, pink for girl and I have designed them to match engagement and wedding rings.

But this was a first, I was asked to design an eternity ring incorporating 25 diamonds to celebrate 25 years of marriage which I have to say I thought was rather cool and certainly unique.

I hope you liked the end result as much as I did and the couple

The Stunning Sapphire

November 6, 2012 @ 3:07 pm
posted David Law

The gossip columns are chatting like wildfire about whether Whitney Huston’s daughter Bobbi Kristina is actually engaged or not, but one thing is for certain she was spotted wearing a sapphire and diamond ring on her engagement ring finger, now the question is why red, was it a personal choice or Bobbi not following the trends for the year being the colour Blue.

Mixing a stunning sapphire into the design of an engagement ring is currently a growing trend, this could be because our Duchess of Cambridge is wearing Diana’s ring or simply because celebrities like Bobbi Kristina are following in her footsteps.

Can this be a coincident, for example over the past month I have been commissioned to make six such rings, not copies but six unique individual rings which is so exciting for me and I can’t wait to share these with you.

So the big question is, what makes a sapphire so popular?

It has been known that the Sapphire is on a par with a Ruby, classed as the second hardest gemstone after a diamond making this the perfect stone to be worn on a daily basis. However, more importantly it comes in a variance of stunning shades from the prized Kashmir and Burmese sapphires displaying an intense velvety deep blue to the

Sri Lankan and Madagascar sapphire which offers a wide range of colours from light sky to rich dark blues.

The market is filled with so much choice, it would be hard to not to find a stone that you would fall in love with and make it your own.

But beware, by tip for this feature is,
Although most sapphires are heat treated to enrich their colour there is a difference between heat treatment and chemically enhanced sapphires so make sure you seek out a reputable jeweller who is able to guide you to the right stone for you,

If you would like to discover more about the sapphire please do get in touch, I am always happy to help answer any question and offer my knowledge to you and your partner

What’s in a colour

October 22, 2012 @ 7:07 pm
posted David Law

2012 has seen brides turn away from the traditional solitaire engagement ring, unless of course you are Jennifer Aniston with her slightly over the top 8ct diamond.

However, young ladies of today are looking for something a little different, more unique to them. This is probably why halo and Art Deco settings have been so popular this year allowing endless design Possibilities with less need to have a big rock in the middle, sorry Jennifer.

This trend is sure to carry into 2013 but with a subtle difference, more introduction of colour. Setting the trend for that wonderful mix of adding colourful gemstones wrapped around a backdrop of Gold.

Adding the splash of colour to the latest jewellery designs has been driven primarily because of recent fashion shows, chatter from the catwalk and a explosion of innovative ideas setting new trends for brides to be across the country.

Dress designs incorporating ‘portrait’ or detailed backs, heavy use of lace and waist-defining peplums, these new designs are moving away from the more traditional styles and  known designers have introduced a huge splash of colour to dresses for 2013. All of which incorporate bold reds, oranges, blues and even black.  Anything appears to go when it comes to dress colour in 2013 and I think it's fair to say colour will play a prominent part both in engagement and wedding rings as well.

How to buck a trend, the fight is on between the high street jewellery shop vs. a fashion shop, who will win?
In my humble opinion, it is felt that the fashion shops will openly embrace the latest designs where as the traditional jewellery stores will continue to sell the tried and tested.

Perhaps this is why the there has been such  a growth this year in bespoke jewellery, using modern methods is more affordable than it has ever been which means that you really can be a trend setter and designer all wrapped in one
