How To Choose Your Perfect Diamond

Sparkling, Elegant, Beautiful

Choosing Your Perfect Diamond

Diamonds come in all shapes and sizes, and there is sure to be one to suit your taste, style and budget. When choosing a diamond, there are several essential aspects to be considered, commonly known as the four Cs: colour, clarity, cut and carat.

Diamond Colour

Diamonds are graded by colour – in most cases, the more colourless the diamond, the higher its value. The exceptions to this rule are the fancy coloured diamonds, such as pinks, yellows and blues.

GIA is the industry standard for measuring diamond colour. The letter D represents the most colourless diamonds, ranging up to the letter Z for a light yellow or brown diamond.

As you can imagine, colour grades are judged under controlled lighting and precise viewing conditions.

Diamond Clarity

Clarity is a measure of the flawlessness of a diamond, and the clarity rating affects the beauty and price of each stone.
Virtually all diamonds have some imperfections known as inclusions and blemishes.

The industry standard rates all gem-grade diamonds on a scale from FL for flawless, to I3 for heavily included.

A diamond is described as ‘flawless’ if no external imperfections or internal flaws are visible under 10-power magnification. Flawless diamonds are scarce – and impacts the price accordingly.

Diamond Cut

The most critical of the four Cs is the cut of your diamond, as it not only governs its shape, but also the fire, life and brilliance it displays.

Diamonds are carefully cut and polished to emphasise the stone’s brilliance. Traditional diamond shapes include Brilliant, Princess, Oval, Marquise, Pear, and Emerald.

A diamond should work as a mirror, capturing the light and reflecting it from one facet to another before sending it back to the crown of the stone.

Diamond Carat

The weight of a diamond is measured in carats. One carat is equivalent to 0.200 grams – but weight alone doesn’t determine the diamond’s value.

When you compare two diamonds of the same weight, the value depends on the quality of each stone.

When you compare two diamonds of equal quality, the larger stone will usually hold considerably more value. Typically, a two-carat diamond will be worth more than twice as much as a one-carat stone.

I can't recommend David enough.

Understood the value of the piece to us both and walked me through each step of the process, welcoming input from a design perspective and offering ideas I would have not thought of.

The final piece is beautiful and I will definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for a bespoke service.

My new fiancee and I are delighted with the ring David created. Having sent out several enquiries he was the first person to get back to me, and was clear and up-front on all aspects of the process from the outset. Despite having undoubtedly worked on far costlier projects, at no point did I feel that our job was any less important to him. The final piece is beautiful and even better than we expected - thank you David for your time and expertise!

My experience designing an engagement ring with David was excellent. He was flexible and patient as we worked towards a bespoke, custom and alternative engagement ring.

The wax printing of each iteration helps with the design phase and the final product was fantastic.

My partner was over the moon with the necklace I gave her for her birthday, which was designed and made by David. He came to my office twice at my convenience, talked me through the process, was reasonable in pricing and extremely friendly. When I requested a last minute change, David obliged, went back and made the necklace exactly to my request. A great experience and fabulous outcome. I will be using David's services again!
