A coloured gemstone engagement ring makes a statement and can be a real conversation piece.
Coloured gemstones are a beautiful way of making a real style statement – they're uniquely expressive, dazzlingly vivid and increasingly edgy.
The significant advantage of choosing a coloured gemstone is that they come in an array of stunning colours, each with their unique characteristics.
The sapphire family and rubies are the most commonly used in a gemstone engagement ring as they are incredibly durable. Whereas some gemstones are too brittle and soft for daily wear such as opal and pearls and depending on the setting Emeralds and Tanzanite fall also into that category
Another advantage of a gemstone over a diamond is that you get more for your money.
Ruby Engagment Rings
The Ruby is the most valuable of all the gemstones and commands the highest per-carat price of any coloured stone. Ruby is one of the most precious gems in the coloured stone market. In its purest form, the mineral corundum is colourless. Chromium is the trace element that causes Ruby's red colour with the Burmese Ruby the most famous and expensive stone.
Sapphire Engagment Rings
The name "sapphire" can also apply to any corundum that's not ruby, another corundum variety.
Sapphire's can be found in a variety of colours with blue being the most used, yellow, green, orange, pink, purple and violet. Some sapphires exhibit a phenomenon known as colour change, going from blue in daylight or fluorescent lighting to purple under incandescent light.
Emerald Engagment Rings
Emerald part of the bluish-green to green variety of the beryl family and despite its softness for daily wear a popular choice for an engagement ring setting.
Gemologists differ on the intensity of green that makes an emerald more expensive than less-expensive green beryl. Most experts call a stone green beryl when its colour is "too light" for it to be classified as emerald.
Aquamarine Engagemnet Rings
Like emeralds, an aquamarine comes from the beryl family of stones.
The aquamarine took its name from seawater, with their fresh watery hue like a cool plunge into a refreshing pool.
As March's birthstone its also thought to enhance the happiness of marriage making it an ideal choice for an engagement ring. The best colours combine high clarity with limpid transparency from blue to slightly greenish-blue hues.
Tourmaline Engagment Rings
Although not part of the top four gemstones found in an engagement ring, the tourmaline is becoming an increasingly popular choice with the broadest colour range of any gem.
Gem experts generally agreed that traces of iron, and possibly titanium, induce the green and blue colours. Manganese produces reds and pinks and yellow tones.
Tanzanite Engagemnet Rings
The name tanzanite comes from where they were first discovered in Tanzania in 1967. The colour ranges from the lush blue to the vibrant violet and rich purple with the exotic tanzanite found in only one place near majestic Mount Kilimanjaro.
Although not ideal for daily wear, it has not stopped making the tanzanite one of the most sought after coloured gemstones.

I can't recommend David enough.
Understood the value of the piece to us both and walked me through each step of the process, welcoming input from a design perspective and offering ideas I would have not thought of.
The final piece is beautiful and I will definitely recommend to anyone who is looking for a bespoke service.
David gave excellent guidance throughout this process. His wealth of experience ensured he was able to offer both practical guidance and also help to deliver a beautiful and unique design.
I would absolutely recommend David to anyone considering having any jewellery designed.
My new fiancee and I are delighted with the ring David created. Having sent out several enquiries he was the first person to get back to me, and was clear and up-front on all aspects of the process from the outset. Despite having undoubtedly worked on far costlier projects, at no point did I feel that our job was any less important to him. The final piece is beautiful and even better than we expected - thank you David for your time and expertise!
David continues to exceed expectations with respect to being a truly personal jeweller. Having made an outstanding engagement ring for my wife over 10 years ago, he's made matching eternity rings after 5 and 10 years that have seamlessly matched. Timeless designs, effortless customer experience. Thanks David!
My experience designing an engagement ring with David was excellent. He was flexible and patient as we worked towards a bespoke, custom and alternative engagement ring.
The wax printing of each iteration helps with the design phase and the final product was fantastic.
My partner was over the moon with the necklace I gave her for her birthday, which was designed and made by David. He came to my office twice at my convenience, talked me through the process, was reasonable in pricing and extremely friendly. When I requested a last minute change, David obliged, went back and made the necklace exactly to my request. A great experience and fabulous outcome. I will be using David's services again!
David is very creative and thorough and sources only the best stones. He customises your pieces to suit you. He designed my engagement ring and all my wedding jewellery and they are all absolutely exquisite. My husband and I would not go anywhere else.
