Why Choose a Coloured Gemstone Engagement Ring?

A coloured gemstone can make an engagement ring immediately personal.

You may be drawn to a particular colour, a birthstone, a gemstone with family significance, or want something different from a traditional diamond engagement ring.

Rather than starting with a predetermined ring style, David will first help you explore the possibilities, find your perfect gem, and create a design centred on the gemstone you choose, taking into account its colour, proportions and character, as well as how you want the finished ring to look and feel.

Choosing the Right Gemstone for an Engagement Ring

Not every beautiful gemstone suits an engagement ring worn every day.

When David proposes gemstones, he considers not only colour, cut and size, but also their durability and suitability for long-term wear. Sapphires and rubies remain among the most popular choices for their exceptional durability, while emeralds and tanzanites are also sought after for their distinctive colour but require greater care and consideration.

If a particular gemstone isn't ideally suited to how you intend to wear your ring, David can explain the practical considerations and suggest alternatives with similar colour or character.

Your Gemstone, Handpicked for You

Two gemstones of the same variety, weight and apparent description can look remarkably different.

Colour can vary in tone, saturation, and intensity, while a stone's cut affects its proportions and how it responds to light.

Rather than asking you to choose from a standard catalogue, David will source individual gemstones for your ring, allowing you to compare options and choose the one that feels right for you.

Designing Around the Gemstone

Once you have found your gemstone, the ring can be designed around it. The setting, precious metal, proportions and any accompanying diamonds can all be developed to complement the centre stone rather than forcing it into an existing design.

You might choose a simple solitaire, surround your gemstone with diamonds, create a three-stone ring or develop something entirely individual. David will create the design with you, refining the details until the gemstone and ring feel as though they were always intended to belong together.

See Your Gemstone Ring Before It Is Made

Choosing an unusual gemstone doesn't mean having to imagine how the finished ring will look. David will develop the ideas you discussed through detailed 3D designs, then create a wearable wax model at full scale.

Where appropriate, your chosen gemstone can be positioned with the model so you can experience the proportions and appearance together. You can see it, wear it and refine the details before approving the design for handcrafting in David's Hatton Garden workshop.

Can I Use a Family Gemstone?

A gemstone already in your family can become the starting point for an entirely new engagement ring. David will examine the stone, discuss whether it is suitable for reuse and create a design around its individual dimensions and character.

If the gemstone is currently set in another piece of jewellery, you do not need to have it removed before your first meeting. David can initially assess the existing piece and discuss the possibilities with you.
